We provide a challenge curriculum ensuring that children benefit through the delivery of a rich, diverse, creative approach to teaching and learning with a high focus on using quality texts, mastery in mathematics and collaborative learning. We have identified the following as our curriculum guarantee to learners at The Oak Tree Academy:
1. A curriculum that integrates assessment as an integral part of learning and encourages growth mind sets
2. A curriculum that makes direct links with skills for the future
3. A curriculum that places a high priority on developing speaking and listening skills
4. A curriculum that places a high priority on developing independence skills
In planning an effective curriculum we recognise the following:
Everyone has areas of strength
We will identify all children as intelligent, finding and building upon their areas of strength
Every child deserves to leave school with good literacy and numeracy skills
We will provide a curriculum that prioritises the aquisition of literacy and numeracy skills.
Learning is about making connections
We will recognise that children know and understand many things before they even come to school
We will show children the connections between what they are learning and what they have already learned
Wherever possible, we will relate what we teach to the children’s own experiences or interests
We recognise that children need to see the big picture, and will start each unit of learning with an overview of what the children will be doing and learning
Learning should be fun
We will begin each learning challenge with a ‘smashing start’ and end with a ‘fantastic finish’
We will provide a range of learning and teaching styles to suit all children and provide a range of stimulating learning spaces including learning outside the classroom
We will work to develop children’s self esteem
We will develop social interaction in a friendly and collaborative classroom
Good health is important to an effective brain
We will provide frequent and easy access to water
We will promote a healthy balanced diet
We will encourage children to eat fruit at breaktimes
We will teach children about healthy living
We see our daily assemblies as central to our ethos. These are times when different groupings within school or even the whole school can get together. These short times (just 15 minutes) offer a time for reflection, singing, praise and/or celebration. We have a programme of themes based on values such as friendship, courage, responsibility, hope, perserverance, peace, thankfulness, generosity and trust.
Parents can ask for their children to be withdrawn from RE or Collective Worship. Anyone wishing to do this must first make an appointment with the Principal to discuss their reasons for withdrawing their child and to arrange how their child will be supervised during these times.
Continual assessment of pupils takes place through marking and feedback, tests and observation. Pupil tracking and recording systems help teachers to monitor individual progress; this information is used to inform next steps and future planning. Pupils are formally assessed at the end of year 1 for phonics and then at the end of year 2 and year 6 for English and mathematics.
The Oak Tree Academy use Read Write Inc. Phonics to help teach children to read accurately and fluently with good comprehension. They learn to form each letter, spell correctly, and compose their ideas step-by-step.
